As tablets have become increasingly cheaper and more powerful, the netbook industry has been forced to bring their A-game when it comes to redesigning and developing new netbooks. As a result of this competition, netbooks have also followed in the trend of becoming faster, smaller, more powerful and less expensive. Many netbooks now rival their big brother laptops in their ability to perform multiple tasks at once and serve as a fully-functional mobile companion as opposed to the netbooks of yesteryear which were just for browsing the web. Leading the pack in performance and price is the ASUS Eee PC 1015PX-SU17, a 10” netbook available in stores now.

Product Details and Features

Included in the design of the ASUS Eee PC 1015PX-SU17 is an ergonomic chiclet keyboard and a touchpad with palm rejection technology. It is powered by a state-of-the-art 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N570 processor, 2 GB of DDR3 memory and a 320 GB 5400 RPM hard drive. This is more advanced than the previous 1015PX-MU17 and the 1015PX-PU17 that has only 1GB of memory and a 250GB hard drive.

The ASUS Eee PC comes in a variety of three colors: black, blue and red, and features a 10.1”, 1024 x 600 resolution WSVGA display. The exterior is finished with a scratch-resistant matte design and includes a built-in webcam/microphone combo above the display for easy access to video conferencing and one-on-one web chat. A two-in-one MMC and SD card slot allows for rapid uploading of photos, movies and other files while the VGA, RJ-45 Ethernet and 3 USB ports make video output, internet access and peripheral use a breeze. The ASUS netbook weighs approximately 2.75 pounds, placing it in the middle of the netbook category in terms of weight.

Pros

Included with the purchase of an ASUS Eee PC 1015PX-SU17 is two months of its unlimited web storage for free. This netbook has a very good battery life via a 6-cell Li-Ion battery that will realistically provide eight hours of life allowing for a full day of work or play. The matte screen is nice for situations in which glare is involved and the netbook boots rapidly. The dual-core processor is appreciated in a category where many netbooks are still designed with single-core systems. The Integrated Bluetooth 3.0+HS allows you to use compatible wireless peripherals, including keyboards, mice, and headphones, with the computer.

Cons

As always, there are some complaints with any product. With the ASUS Eee PC 1015PX-SU17, the most noticeable issue is charging time. The 30w AC charger should probably have been designed with more voltage in mind in order to charge the battery from 0-100% in less than two hours; if you need to get somewhere fast, let’s hope that your battery is fully charged. The chiclet keyboard can be an issue for those who have large fingers or older individuals who are not as dexterous, but for most netbook users this should not be a problem. As with many netbooks, intense gaming is not possible due to the lower, integrated graphics systems on netbooks.

Conclusion

The ASUS Eee PC 1015PX-SU17 is a very reasonably priced netbook for its performance category. Currently, one can be obtained for approximately $350. Finding a dual-core netbook with 2 GB of memory and a larger hard drive at this price is still a rare find. The fact that it is an ASUS, known for their stellar quality and pioneering the netbook experience, makes it an ever better deal.
