On December 21, 2009, Intel announced the next generation of Atom processors, the N450, which includes a new and innovative processor microarchitecture.
First Intel Chips to Integrate Graphics and Memory Controller in CPU; Enables Power Reduction, Smaller Systems and Performance Improvements
- Higher level of integration plus 45nm manufacturing enables significant power reduction, performance improvements and smaller package size
- Average power consumption down 20 percent over previous generation, enabling longer battery life in netbooks
- Over 80 netbook design wins from major OEMs including ASUS, Acer, Dell, Toshiba, HP, Lenovo, Samsung and MSI
The Intel Atom N450 (1.66GHz) is the first Intel Chips, that feature integrated graphics and memory controllers built directly into the CPU, bring longer battery life and improved system performance to new generation of netbooks. The Atom N450 chip is 60% smaller than their Diamond Ville (Intel Atom N270 and N280), and consumes close to 20% less power.
Most netbooks on the market today run on Intel Atom N450 or higher CPU and Mobile Intel NM10 Express Chipset. They use the newer Intel GMA 3150 graphics whereas the N270/N280 gets stuck with the GMA 950. The newer GMA 3150 integrated graphics gives the system a small boost in 3Dmark06 compared to previous generation netbooks and seems to handle HD video better.
Most of new netbooks come with 1GB (up to 2GB) and are equipped with 160GB or 250GB Hard drive. The new netbooks will mostly ship with Windows 7 Starter, whereas the older ones run Windows XP.
Additionally, netbooks generally come with a built-in webcam, Wi-Fi, card reader, and USB ports. Some even have extra features such as HDMI outputs, Bluetooth, 3G, GPS, etc.
