You might have seen these mini notebooks on the shelves of the local computer store, or seen an ad in TV, but what are they exactly? Why are they so cheap? Is there something missing?
Netbooks have been very popular, and their price is just one of the factors that made them a complete new category, and one that sells well, too.
1. Netbooks are designed to be as small as possible while still providing as much comfort as possible. You may have noticed, but the standard notebook screen area is 10″ diagonally, even the largest ones are just 11.6″ compared to the 13″ smallest laptops have. This is a place to save on the costs, but not the only one.
2. Amount of memory installed in netbooks is usually less than that of business category laptops. In a normal laptop you would expect to buy for $500 2GB RAM is almost mandatory. You would have to look to find one with less than that while netbooks are usually fitted with just 1GB.
3. The processor is considerably slower, too. A normal notebook usually comes with dual core processor, about 2GHz, and the performance lines up with desktop computers too. At least you don’t run into programs that don’t work well on a normal notebook. On the other hand netbooks are crafted to perfection when it comes to portability. Their low consumption main processing unit helps keeping the battery life long.
4. The hard disk drive you see in laptops is either 320GB or 500GB. That is some serious amount of data held, and it takes some time to run out of that much storage space. There are differences obviously, but the standard is much higher than what you can find in mini notebooks. The most you see in units on the shelves today is 320GB, but 160GB and 250GB are much more common. Not that you run out of space soon on a 160GB HDD either, but it definitely puts a limit to what you can have on your device at any given time.
5. There are no mini notebook computers made with integrated optical drive. It’s just another place where makers can shave off a few dollars of the final bill, but you will find out that it’s not that big of an issue. Almost everything is available online, and if you have a serious collection of CDs an external DVD writer that reads everything but HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is still available for $50.
Netbooks are much cheaper than other laptops, but they lack some functionality too. If you are aware of your priorities you may as well make a good use of a mini, despite all the shortcomings and limitations.
